Material Magic – High Chrome Iron

The R-Series submersible slurry pump is available in several different alloys to best fit a specific application’s challenges. Today’s alloy focus is high chrome iron.

ASTM A532 is the standard that covers specifications for abrasion resistant cast irons. These white cast irons can also be known as “high chrome irons” for their higher chromium content. Chromium is a key component of alloys with regards to corrosion resistance and hardness. The R-Series pump is available in a Class III Type A high chrome alloy which carries a 23%-30% chromium composition.

High chrome iron is the hardest and most abrasion resistant material available in the R-Series pump. After heat treatment, hardness is in the 600-650 HB range. “HC600” is a material term you may have seen before and refers to hard/high chrome and the anticipated hardness.

Industries often requiring high chrome iron submersible slurry pumps given their abrasive nature:

  • Mining / dredging
  • Steel / metals production
  • Power generation
  • Oil and gas

Although incredibly hard, high chrome iron is brittle and care must be taken with regards to shock and impact loading. It is also provides mild corrosion resistance and is best suited for more neutral pH ranges.

Recap

High chrome iron is the hardest material available for the R-Series submersible pump and best suited for applications where abrasion is the biggest concern. If chemical concentrations or corrosion may present a bigger challenge, then another material choice may be required. Stay tuned for more materials coverage.
