Material Magic – Nickel Alloys

The R-Series submersible slurry pump is available in several different alloys to best fit a specific application’s challenges. Previously, high chrome iron and stainless steel variants were covered.

Today’s focus is on nickel alloys.

For the most severe corrosive sump applications a nickel alloy pump may be the best solution. Nickel pumps often alloyed with other elements such as chromium, molybdenum, copper, and tungsten can offer significant resistance to pitting, crevice, and stress corrosion compared to traditional stainless steel alloys in many severe applications:

  • Sulfuric acid
  • Phosphoric acid
  • Nitric acid
  • Hydrochloric acid
  • Brine / seawater

Alloy 20 is well known for sulfuric acid performance but can also handle phosphoric and nitric acid. Alloy C276 is perhaps the most well known high performance nickel alloy and has a long track record of proven corrosion resistance in a wide range of applications. Alloy 22 is similar to C276 but with a more chromium and less molybdenum. It has better performance in oxidizing environments compared to its counterpart. Alloy B2 has minimal chromium but increased nickel and molybdenum content and excels in extreme reducing environments.

The R-Series submersible pumps are available in the following nickel alloys:
